Hi, my name is Gail, and I hope to provide you with an honest and
formative 17 Day Diet review.
I am no stranger to dieting, and have tried many diets over the
years from fad diets like the cabbage soup diet to low-carb, low-fat and low-calorie diets. Like many other
people I would often lose weight only to find that as soon as I went back to regular eating I would put the
weight back on, and often a bit more besides.
Firstly, my before and after photos displayed on the left, are not
the result of the 17 Day Diet, but rather as a result of many years of trying different
diets, and finally finding one that worked for me, and indeed will work for just about everybody else,
too.
17 Day Diet Review by an Experienced Dieter
As soon as I began reading the17 Day Diet, the first thing that struck me was that it was in fact, not a 17 Day Diet. It
consists of three phases each lasting 17 days before you are qualified to enter the maintenance phase. If you are
not familiar with the foods you can eat on the 17 Day Diet or the basic rules, you can read about them
here:
Needless to say, finding out the 17 Day Diet was a 51 day diet,
put me off a bit and made me wonder if the book was just another hyped-up sales gimmick full of rehashed
information that is already out there. However, on the other hand, if you spend time, money and effort on writing a
diet plan book, in reality you do need to hype it up somewhat to make sales, and no-one can blame or criticize the
author for trying to make as many sales as possibdo that, and in reality if you need to lose more than 20 lbs, I
think we all know we are not going to be able to do that in less than several weeks.
17 Day Diet Cons
The first phase of the diet will probably
disappoint many, as basically you are told to eat lean proteins and vegetables. As most of us who have read
anything about weight loss already know that lean proteins and vegetables will support weight loss, it may come as
a disappointment to hear there is nothing new to this first phase of the diet. However, this is not strictly true,
as 17 Day Diet author Dr. Mike Monroe also includes
additional tips that it would not be fair (and possibly illegal due to copyright issues) to disclose here, on how
to speed up weight loss during the first phase. In addition, although we might want to hear something new and
revolutionary, the truth is lean proteins and vegetables ARE the best foods for weight loss, whether we like it or
not, and telling us to eat other foods probably wouldn't really be in our best interests.
The problems I see with this phase of the 17 days diet are the foods
are a bit restrictive, albeit halthy and tasty. Other restrictions include it is difficullt for vegetarians,
you are not supposed to drink even one glass of alcohol during 17 days, and there is no real advice on how to
get through difficult moments. The good points I see about this phase is the foods are very, very nutritious
and will help you to feel full, no macronutrient (carbs, proteins and fats) is strictly forbidden, and there
is no doubt that if you can stick this phase out, you will lose most surely lose weight - and probably quite a
lot of it too. In fact, if you only have around 10 or 12 pounds to lose, you will likely find that if you
follow the instructions to the letter for 17 days, you will have lost the weight and can then move straight to
the maintenance stage, which would in effect make the "17 Day Diet" title correct.
The second phase is not much more lenient than the first, but
you are allowed a wider variety of foods, but they are of the same type you were eating in phase one, so
the additional foods are not likely to make you feel much less deprived. However, again, if you are motivated
enough, sticking to the plan for another 17 days will surely bring on the desired results. Many reviewers on
Amazon reached their targets of 15 to 20 lbs by the end of the second phase.
After the first 34 days, it does get quite a bit easier as you can
now add some breads, pasta and fiber-rich cereals to your daily menus. Although 34 days may sound a long
time, in reality it is only 5 weeks, and the weight you will lose is certainly going to compensate for
feelings of deprivation if you can get through it.
During the third stage you can also drink alcohol, albeit only one
glass a day. Dr. Monroe recommends red wine over other alcoholic drinks.
The maintenance stage allows you to eat any foods from the first
three stages during the week, and you can let you hair down a little at weekend. Basically this means you eat
unprocessed meals with limited amounts of fat during the week, but can have a small splurge at the
weekend. I find this doable, and as you will have already succeeded at the much harder first and second
stages by the time you reach this stage, you will probably find it fairly easy by then too.
My 17 Day Diet Review Summary
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would definitely
recommend it as an effective weight loss plan, albeit rather restrictive.
The book provides sample meals for each day of the diet, so if you are the
type of person who prefers to be told what to eat when on a diet, this plan is ideal for you.
The plan doesn't require impossible exercise routines, but if
you are very time challenged or so extremely overweight that any sort of movement is difficult, you may need
to find ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine beyond the ideas suggested in the book.
However, for the majority of people, the book's instructions should be more than adequate.
My one small beef with the plan is Dr. Monroe doesn't go
too much into the phsycological reasons of why some of us overeat - but maybe he doesn't feel qualified to,
and there are other books that do go into that, which could be paired with the 17 Day
Diet.
Before starting the diet, I recommend reading to the end of the
book, as you will find solutions on how to cope if you are part of an ethnic family and how to adapt Asian,
Persian and Hispanic (among others) foods to fit in with the 17 Day Diet. Dr. Monroe also goes into specifics
for those who work night shifts, or who have a partner who tries to sabotage their efforts. These chapters are
extremely helpful.
There is also a section on how to diet if you are feeling low
with PMS, (which was rather condescending and obviously written by a man!) and how to diet if you are eating out,
or at a work social setting.
Before reading the 17 Day Diet, I read many of the 17 day diet reviews
on Amazon. They were generally very positive, with the vast majority if people saying they did
experience weight loss.
The main complaints were similar to my own findings; some of
the foods were hard for some people to find, and others claimed it was just another low-carb plan. Click

diet users.
I hope you have enjoyed my 17 day diet review, and most of all, found it
helpful.
